FiveM Legacy vs Enhanced

GTA V on PC comes in two editions, and FiveM has a version for each. What that means for you, what you need installed, and which Escape servers run where.

The short answer

  • GTA V on PC comes in two editions, Legacy and Enhanced. Enhanced adds ray tracing, DLSS and FSR with frame generation, and faster loading.
  • FiveM has a separate version for each, and each one needs its own edition of GTA V installed. FiveM for GTA V Enhanced is not an update to regular FiveM.
  • Every server runs on one or the other and there is no cross-play, so install the pair that matches the server you want to join.

What you need installed

Each server runs on one of these. To join it, you need both things above it in its column.

What are GTA V Legacy and GTA V Enhanced?

They are the two editions of GTA V on PC. Rockstar released GTA V Enhanced in March 2025 with ray tracing and other modern graphics features, and renamed the original edition GTA V Legacy.

Both are supported. Rockstar kept Legacy so players whose PCs are below Enhanced’s requirements can keep playing, and so FiveM keeps working on it.

If you already own GTA V on PC, Enhanced is a free upgrade. Anyone buying GTA V on PC today gets both editions.

Is FiveM for GTA V Enhanced just a new FiveM to install?

No. There are two FiveM downloads on fivem.net, and each runs on top of a different edition of the game:

  • FiveM (the one most players already have) runs on GTA V Legacy.
  • FiveM for GTA V Enhanced runs on GTA V Enhanced, so GTA V Enhanced has to be installed before FiveM for GTA V Enhanced will work.

Installing the new FiveM alone is not enough if your PC only has GTA V Legacy. Both editions, and both FiveM versions, can be installed side by side.

Can I join a Legacy server from FiveM for GTA V Enhanced, or the other way round?

No. Each server runs on one version of FiveM, and you join it with that version. There is no cross-play between them, so a friend on the other version is on a different set of servers.

What’s better about Enhanced?

Two layers improve at once: the game underneath, and FiveM itself.

From GTA V Enhanced, depending on your hardware:

  • Ray-traced shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and global illumination.
  • NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR upscaling, with frame generation.
  • Faster loading of the game from an SSD, using DirectStorage.
  • Dolby Atmos audio and DualSense adaptive triggers.

These settings are there inside FiveM for GTA V Enhanced, not only in single-player GTA V.

From FiveM for GTA V Enhanced, according to Cfx, the team that makes FiveM:

  • Players sync through the server instead of directly with each other, which Cfx says reduces latency.
  • Servers update 60 times a second by default and can be set as high as 120, where Legacy tops out at 40. Escape Arena on Enhanced runs at 120.
  • More precise bullet impacts, and dead bodies that stay in sync between players.

Why play on Legacy?

  • It runs on far older PCs: a graphics card with 1GB of video memory and a regular hard drive meet its minimum, where Enhanced needs 4GB and an SSD.
  • FiveM ran only on Legacy until July 2026, so most FiveM servers, and the scripts, maps and vehicles they are built from, are made for it.
  • Graphics mods work on Legacy servers that allow them. FiveM for GTA V Enhanced does not allow graphics mods while it is in early access.
  • Rockstar and Cfx both still update it, including support for the newest GTA Online content.

What PC do I need?

Enhanced asks a lot more of your PC. Rockstar’s minimum for Enhanced is a GeForce GTX 1630 or Radeon RX 6400 with 4GB of video memory, 8GB of RAM and an SSD. For Legacy it is a GeForce 9800 GT or Radeon HD 4870 with 1GB, 4GB of RAM and a hard drive.

Ray tracing is for PCs at or above Enhanced’s recommended specs.

Is FiveM for GTA V Enhanced finished?

Not yet. It has been in early access since July 21, 2026, so expect bugs, frequent updates and a few things still missing. Graphics mods cannot be used yet, and connecting to a server currently takes longer than on Legacy while Cfx works on loading times.

Which Escape servers run on which?

Escape RP runs on FiveM for GTA V Legacy. Escape RP Enhanced runs on FiveM for GTA V Enhanced (in development). Escape Arena runs on FiveM for GTA V Enhanced and FiveM for GTA V Legacy (in development).

Does my character carry over between servers?

No. Every Escape server keeps its own characters, money and progress, so each one is a fresh start. Rockstar’s one-time transfer from Legacy to Enhanced only covers GTA Online and story mode; FiveM characters live on each server, not in your Rockstar account.

Which should I pick?

Start from the server you want to play. If it runs on Enhanced and your PC meets the requirements, install GTA V Enhanced and then FiveM for GTA V Enhanced. If it runs on Legacy, or your PC is below Enhanced’s minimum, use GTA V Legacy and regular FiveM. Neither is the old or the new way to play: they are two separate sets of servers.
